Transporting animals via a courier
This is for information only, it is not law just free advice
TNT and the like are not couriers, they are a general parcel delivery company who also deliver animals, your driver collects and drops at his depot, your parcel is then reloaded into a cage and moved to another hub depot where it is reloaded onto another cage to go to its delivery depot where it is reloaded on to the van that delivers it.
You don’t get a collection time often and delivery can be anytime next day unless you pay for before 9am before 11 am
Whats That, Sam the van man ferret L n D etc are hand to hand point to point couriers, they collect and deliver with no driver or van changing so ultimate care is taken at all times
Collection and delivery times can be given and though can change depending on weather traffic accidents etc are quite reliable, which is why bookings have to close prior to departure and while it is possible to add to a run after the run sheet has been completed late bookings will need to be accomodating when it comes to collection and delivery times
Before sending animals via a courier please consider a few things
Do not feed snakes for at least 5 days prior to being collected, it can cause them problem whilst in transit
Snakes should always be packed in a bag, pillowcase or duvet cover in a polybox, not loose in a rub with all its décor
Lizards are best in some form of faunarium with plenty of tissue in it just to cushion any movement that might take place
Mammals in a tough tub/rub packed with plenty of straw/hay or whatever substrate they are normally kept on, also a water bowl for watering on route would be good
Inverts in tubs small enough to pack well with tissue to avoid much movement and cushion any possible falls
All of our vans have fitted inverters so we can run heat cables and mats, although we do keep reptiles at a lower than their normal temperature as this keeps them calm during transport, they are normally kept at between 19 and 23 degrees
We also have satellite tracking so you can track us wherever we are and see how far we are from you
We also have mobile Internet in all the vans so you can have live updates and pictures if you want
We also complete a UNITED KINGDOM ANIMAL TRANSPORT CERTIFICATE (wit 6) for each delivery, which logs all welfare checks that we carry out en route; you get a copy of this on delivery

(make sure your courier can provide this, otherwise the vechicle is unauthorised)

Venomous need to be marked up with a warning.
(Not so much for our benefit but if the worst happened emergency services would need to know.)
ALL containers MUST be escape proof.
Small tubs with kitchen roll is ok for most small reptiles.
I normally carry spare tubs and pillow cases if needed but prefer the seller to provide their own.
Water need not be sent with an animal, we would water as and when needed.
Any further information from seller to buyer can be included in writing, you can't expect us to remember what you tell us.
Contact numbers for both parties is essential.
I have mobile internet for pm's but not always available.
