Hi,

Just wondered if there was any gerbil peeps out there? I currently have a breeding pair of Mongolian gerbils plus a lone duprasi (and a robo, guinea pigs cats and rabbits :lol2.

I'd love to chat and swap advice with any other little critter lovers lurking about :smile:

Rosie my Duprasi is dubbed Satan due to her temperament. She's not a people gerbil :devil: so could never be bred from. I blame it largely on that she came from a petshop and so didn't get vital socialization early on. Rosie was 8 months when she came to love with us and by which time she was very much set in her ways. I bet your babies are lovely though. I've heard that Duprasi are very docile if handled appropriately from a young age.

Hi,

Duprasi are fantastic creatures. If handled from an early age they are a dream to own. I only have one older Duprasi female now, a wonderful character called Teal. I do rodent displays linked with my local zoo at various local events throughout the year (such as Wildlife Weekends) and the Duprasi have been the most popular species of rodent that I have taken to these displays. Folk have fallen in love with their gorgeous faces and expressions.

I also keep Mongolian Gerbils. Some of the gerbils are ones that I have bred (I no longer breed them though) and others are rescues. One of the most wonderful gerbil characters that I have is an Agouti called Bay. Bay is about two and a half years old and was a rescue. He came to live with me at the beginning of 2008 with his sister and mother and father (they came -skin and bone - in a very small tank with less than an inch of substrate that you could wring out - they stank:bash.

Bay has been the most loving, amazing little character. In the last month he has had really dodgy health troubles as he had surgery to remove a scent gland tumour and then a week later had a stroke. He has come through both and now looks great again. He's a special little guy .:flrt:

Are you any good with genetics? I (I have tried and failed to get my head around it on more than one occasion :blush: ) Any ideas on colours of pups when/ if they breed?

What sort of gerbie set up do you have?

Your duprasi sounds lovely I can't see anyone falling in love with Rosie at a zoo display though ha! It's not her fault, she's just happiest tunnelled deep under her substrate and going hell for leather on the wheel. I would of liked to have found a duprasi breeder but sadly there are none in my area and a local pet shop seemed my only means of acquiring one. She has got a bit better since living with us although we've all encountered her wrath at one time or another! Our little girl ain't never gonna be cuddle gerbie :roll:

Your cats are to die for! I have 2 BSH and will be entering one for their first show in September. Do you show your boys? Incidentally one of my twin boys (none fur variety this time!) is called Harley!

No these are purely pets although many years ago I used to breed and show Siamese. I hope your Harley is better behaved than mine:whistling2:
I always wanted twins so I have to hope that when my daughter and her fiance have babies they will produce a set(Martin is a twin)

Over time he realised that humans were ok and became tame. He went around the schools, encounter sessions, and was a fantastic ambassador for his species. He died at a grand old age in January.

I hope to find another Duprasi or two later in the year. Although I've known a couple of rogue Duprasi, most are amazing and very endearing creatures.

Yes I suspect Rosie may well fall into the rogue category! She squeals the house down when picked up, pee's on your hand and then sinks her teeth in (usually forgetting to let go again) Weirdly though she hasn't put me off the species just buying from pet shops. If I could find a decent breeder I'd definitely own one again.

I knew that some lines were particularly aggressive and I suspect that our Rose is descended from these. It's just poor breeding at the end of the day. When I carried out research ahead of breeding my Mongolian gerbils I learned that most pet shops in my area source their stock from a rodent farm. This probably explains a lot

HI i have 7 mongolian gerbils have also had duprasi's in the past
Curently i have 4 boys Cebe-rus are two brothers lilac siamese then peanut and pickle who i just acquired one is a slate pied and the other a silver nutmeg then i have 3 girls called Aphro-di-te who are a black with white feet and chin a white and a pale cream i think they are really sweet Peanut and pickle were taken to pets at hme said to be unhandleable at only 6 months old but they are actually very social and like to give cuddles although they are a little skittish
