Mats are generally less expensive to use as they are very low wattage. However they are also poor at heating larger enclosures and I personally prefer ceramics for lizards and larger snakes.

Whilst I appreciate that cost is an issue with reo keeping (you're talking to a poor student here :wink: ) you may find that you have no option but to use bulbs in some cases.

There is also the issue of making false floors for heatmats in wooden vivs which can be a real pain!

If you use a thermostat (which you should be using for ALL your heaters) then there is not much difference, as the heater will only use the energy needed to keep the viv at the desired temperature.
