due to a new addition coming to the family in may, i am forced to sell our monkey tailed skinks :( how do i go about making sure they get the best possible home?? what questions should i be asking potential buyers?? i dont want to sell, but when the baby is here i won't have the time or money to give them the attention/care that they need, and it's best i let them go to another loving owner then let them be neglected. can any one give me tips?? they are breeding a pair, and we also have their baby who was born on 6th oct 2006, offering full set up with them, seperation of the adults is out of the question, but there is a possibility i may let the baby go, as long as it goes into another group, but this would have to be soon... please help, i want to make sure that they get the best home, and that who ever has them has the knowledge/time to care for them properly... also where should i be advertising them, apart from on here?
cheers

erm where there nearest rep vet is
where in the house they plan on keeping them
ask them what other reps they have

shame you have to sell em. They are lovely!
best bit is how they almost mother their babies..BIG babies though!! you hear of twins sometimes but could you imagine carrying them round!!!? :)

manda is right ask questions they couldn't easily find the answer to. Always meet the person before selling and if you do not like them DO NOT sell!! if you don't like them their is usually a reason..do not sell to a dealer. There are some out there that are pretty good but most don't care about the animals...only after £££££

some good sites:

www.reptileclassifieds.co.uk (used mostly by dealers)

www.livefoodshop.co.uk

www.pets-classifieds.co.uk

the bottom two are your best bet...oh and there is one called preloved that is ok too..don't know the site though...

i would have them but am getting three more chams next week and don't have the room for another walk in.... :(

I am sorry to hear you are having to part with your skinks :( It is a dsifficult decision to make :( :(

I, perosnally, would firstly try to approach people who keep skinks as a specialist species - try sites like www.bluetongueskink.net - that way you may stand a better chance of finding a person who already knows thier care requirements and someone who may have been looking for a pair for some time.

Another option is to maybe approach other breeders to see if they could offer them a home? I know of 1 person who has a pair of these and I am sure there are other keepers out there.

I agree with Manda about the questions to ask. Try to find out if potential buyers know basic care requirements, what they would do in tricky situations, if they have a local reptile vet and ask them for the contact details so you can be sure the vet is able to deal with this species in particular (a lot of so called "reptile specialist" vets don't really know as much as they say!)

Then, of course, if you can find a buyer form the forums you use regular who is also a regular member, you have the added bouns of knowing who they are going to and being able to stay in touch.

Best of luck finding them a home that will give them everything you have already :)

she wants them to be well looked after though.....

Once you hand them to a shop you lose control over who ends up with them also............

i've had an offer from our local herp shop, but she doesn't look after the animals in there properly and all she is interested in is the £££, and personally i woulndn't trust her with a dead animal, let alone my babies.
yes they are live bearers, she only had the one this year, the last time she was gravid she did have twins, so it is in her genetics.

it's unfortunate that there are a lot of shops only interested in money...i know at the end of the day that is their main goal but they should at least treat the animals well.. :(
i would just advertise and see..then you can sort out the riff raff..monkey tail skinks do not come up too often and a colony is even rarer..there should be a few people out there interested..just gotta find the right one..try the websites and see what happens.. :)
