I've heard of leaf litter being used on the bottom of fish tanks, and this idea really appeals to me for my South America tank.
How do I make sure I'm not putting any nasty parasites into my tank? Is it safe to use leaves from my garden or are there places I can buy it? Does it alter the water parametres in any way?
Any advice would be great, thanks!

I've used oak leaves in my turtle setups before (which also have Swordtail fish in them). It will leach some tannins into the water (like bogwood does), and raise the acidity slightly.

I just stick them in a bucket with boiling water from the kettle, and leave to cool, but that's mainly to get rid of any dirt!

Alternatively, you can buy Indian almond leaves from aquatic sellers on eBay and such, which are used in blackwater setups.

Best,
Paul
