We've had our two axis for 2-3 months now with no issues. Several days ago, our white axi (whose gills are usually red) was all white, including his gills. The other wild type seemed fine. We were afraid there wasn't enough oxygen in the water, so we did a partial (40%) water change and put a new filter bag in the filter. His gills returned to their normal red, and they both seemed fine. Two days ago, we realized neither of them was eating. They seemed to be normal otherwise. This morning when we woke up both axis were dead. What happened???

Sounds like an ammonia problem. With insufficient filtration they can get very bad very quickly. Especially when Axolotls have nearly no tolerance to it.

I would do Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate tests.
