I've an engineer coming today to fit an isolater switch for my electrics. I don't know how long this will take, but obviously everything's going to be switched off so I am worried about my filter bacteria being effected. Any suggestions?

The trip switch isn't working so I need to have an isolator fitted before it so a new box can be fitted. Both houses next door are empty at the moment and no wire long enough, right pest.

I wouldn't have thought it would take him that long. Barring any complications, he should be able to change an entire mains board in an hour or so, so if he's just putting a new main switch in or an mcb, it shouldn't take long.

Thankfully only took 10 minutes! They're back again to do something else, hopefully only another quick job. I must get some back up or something.

you worried about the temps? ... when we had a power cut before, thankfully i was home, grabbed some 2litre drinks bottles, filled them with hot water from the tap and floated them in the tank.

kept the temps nice and stable.

Then just re-fil the bottles with hot water again once its gone cold.

As long as the power isn't off for any extended period of time it shouldn't be a real problem, the 'leccy board blew up my substation and I was out for 2 days. Battery pumps for aeration (and big ass sponge filters media provided from main external), Summer days for warmth with hot water bottles at night if needed and a quick pray I had no major losses just a little case of whitespot which was easy to fix.

Not quite sure how I could adapt it, but I've bought a solar pond pump with a battery, so I could keep the water moving somehow in emergencies. Can always find a way to heat water!

Yeah, I am sure it'll be okay now, just like to be self-reliant at these times. Besides, I wanted a garden fountain  .

all you have to remember is if the filter is off for any lenth of time rinse the media and the filter with water from the tank. befor you switch it back on. that makes sure your not putting any dead backteria back in tank should be fine Alan
