Hi there

We got Monty 2 weeks ago from a specialist, he's a baby snake and the shop owner did say he had fed Monty 5 days before we bought him. we have tried to feed monty 3 times now with pinkies but he is just not interested in his food, the shop owner did say he was on pinkies. Monty is alert and likes being handled now though a little shy to begin with,We dont know what to do, how do you know when your snake needs feeding?

Any advice would be most grateful

Royals are shy by nature, your baby needs to be left alone with no handling util she eats, and be as quiet as possible arround her (it would be a good idea to cover half her viv with a towel for extra privacy). leave her for a week, just change her water, dont touch her, and then try.
make sure she has loads of hiding places as well (scrunched up newspaper all over the viv is great when they are young as they can move about with out being seen !

and another reason why they won't eat is it the temps. are wrong. make sure they are around 92F-94F warm side and 82F-84F cold side. good luck

I know how you feel, im going through the same thing. Have brought some chics to rub over the pinkies see if this interests her. We moved her into a really usefll box and she now resides in our bedroom where its quiet and undisturbed (unfortunitly for me :? ). hoping this helps. we are not handling or bothering her either, not untill she's into a feeding routine.

Do exactly what Julia said - basically try to make them forget that you even exist!
You could try warming the rodent up (but not too much - just enough to simulate body heat) and wiggling it on tongs.
Or just placing it in the tub in front of the hide and leaving it overnight - put it in early evening before they're awake.

If he's in an actual viv he could just be stressed - they prefer to be in something more on the small side - it yours is a really little one then a 9 litre 'Really Useful' box, on a heat mat (or within the viv if you can get the temp right) with a couple of small hides would be ok.

Yeah could be that your royal is feeling a little stressed, excess handling, viv too big, wrong temps, humidy incorrect (get it at 60%), not enough hiding places (they like feeling snug)... The newspaper is a very good tip as is warming the pinkie. Feed you little one where he is hiding don't pick him up before hand. Mine is fully grow and will only take food when he's tucked under his favourite hide!

Many thanks for all your advice, we have all the viv set up right so no probs there, we'll just see how it goes, when monty is more settled l will take some photos and post on here.

i didnt read through other posts but ill post anyway, i might say something that hasnt been said

try wiggling the pinkie with some tongs, try leaving him in a box with a lid, make sure he has air supply tho and give him 2 hours.

try the same thing by putting him in a contain no lid but away from everyone else so he isnt seeing everyone moving around him


and probably the most important thing i can say, try one thing, once a week, the more stressed out you are the more stressed out you are probably making him and he probably isnt stressed out because he can go months without food.

He could also be getting ready to shed,my royal wont accept food for about 2 weeks before a shed,then she'll wait for at least 2 days after before she'll feed again.

and when he does feed put him on fuzzies, pinkies are not very nutritional.
