We often hear people say dont use pine in this hobby, but is it necessarily true? Or another husbandry myth...

This stems form the fact that a lot of the pine trees in N. America release sap which is an irritant to the snakes skin. There was a video decades back on one of the BBC wildlife programs which shoes a woodpecker in a tree with a rat snake that was trying to climb it by using the bark as purchase points, but the sap caused the snake to arch its body away form the tree and eventually it fell to the ground.

So you are correct in that in the shaving and dried format Pine is fine, but it's not ideal for construction where the sap could still be an issue
