Anyone use exoterra canopy for heating?

I have a 3ft exoterra tank and heat with a dome on top of the mesh. I am considering replacing the mesh top with a solid wood one and fitting the lights inside but the other option would be to get a second canopy to house heat bulbs (the max wattage they take is 25w) does anyone heat their exoterra via the canopy? and if so how does the heat hold and how many bulbs do you need to use to achieve it?

I think the conopy would look nicer but I like the idea of getting rid of the mesh as I know it is letting heat out as well as letting it in, a wooden top would mean holding the temp far easier with a lower wattage bulb (using 100w atm to hold cool end at around 80 degrees.

Thanks :)

depends what sort of animal is in it really, heat loving species such as a beardie or uromastyx can't really be adequately heated by those exo terra canopies, but most geckos or chameleons would do great with one. if you want something that looks neat but has more power then the canopy tops maybe consider one of these
Exo Terra : Sunray fixture / Metal Halide Fixture with Ballast and Bulb
the sunray bulbs provide both heat and uv and so there will be no need for additional uv tubes etc.

Thanks for your reply :)
She is a berber skink. I am quite doubtful about the amount of heat the "in canopy" bulbs would give out and really don't want to waste my money on a second canopy if it wont work. Maybe Ill go with a solid top, its probably the cheaper and more reliable option :)

i bought a exo heat bulb for mine to up temps with the exo canopy and must admit its p*ss poor with the 26watt heat lamp .... i did only use the 1 heat bulb with a compact uv in the other side so i would vote against using the canopy as a heat source :) wooden top sounds good :2thumb:

Thanks for your reply. Glad someone can confirm my suspicions. Yeah I think Ill go with the wooden top. I wonder if there is a safe paint I can use on it to make it match the black plastic. lol

Darn, I have changed my phone recently but my previous has a photo of an exo-terra canopy using two 25w small bulbs, one night the plastic around the bulbs melted and the canopy sent down shards of glass into my cresties enclosure - will never use an exoterra canopy again :-S

Paints

After a few minutes more serious consideration ... is there a paint that I would be able to use to paint both the inside and outside of the wooden top and would it need to be sealed? Is there a type of paint/sealant that is safe and wont give off any nasty fumes when it gets heated by the bulbs ? (I mean the bulbs will be attatched to the painted wood and obviously they get hot)

Or what about that "wood look" stuff they use to make book cases and desks etc.. I forget what its called but its basicly like a fake wood face put onto a sheet of mdf or something... They make whole vivs out of the stuff right ? so I guess that would be safe?

I have also had a bulb holder melt in an exocanopy but dont recall the make of bulb I used . It was not greater than 25 watt though. I would have expected that if the maximum wattage is 25 watt the holder would be able to withstand a higher output so that there is a safety margin. It is a worry and its not always possible to keep an eye on things when they are in use. I do check the canopies on quite a regular basis now to see if there is any sign of melting.

I dont know the details yet as Im still waiting on it. Were hopefully trying a canopy that holds heatsource, uv and has built in leds for night time. Once I have it I will post the info on this thread.
