Hello
Im looking for a bit of clarity from the experienced amongst this forum please.

My bearded dragon has been spending a lot of time out of his basking spot and climbing the background wall of his vivarium which is starting to worry us.
He is around 15 weeks old and eating well apart from veg, he still wont touch his veg..
All the bearded dragons in the reptile shops just sit under there basking spot whenever i go in and im wondering if mine should be spending more time in his.
The vivarium is quite large ( 115cm in length ) and the temps are around 110F in the basking spot and around 80F in the cool end which i understand is correct. He does spend some time on the basking spot itself but probably 60% of his daytime is spent sitting on the wall quite high.

My guess is that in the pet shops the basking point is the highest climbing area and thats why they spend there time on it and that mine is climbing the walls to sit closer to the UV bulbs on the roof?

This is very typical behavior. They are semi arboreal animals, and the higher they go, the safer they feel. In the wild you will often find them up a tree or shrub, or on top of fence/electric/phone posts.

Ill think you'll often find them sitting in the basking spot all day at pet stores as many of them don't keep their basking spot warm enough too

Nice looking enclosure. Is that a camera in the corner?

I would recommend having something that allows him to get closer to the light as as far as I'm aware UV light drops of in effectiveness pretty quickly as you get further away from the bulb.

My guy has a branch under his basking spot and likes to climb a decent way up it when he's basking. That being said I've noticed that my beardie has quite a routine when it comes to basking. he tends to go and warm up for a couple of hours in the morning and then comes down to ground level until it's time for feeding. once he's been fed he goes and spends a couple more hours basking and then spends most of his time at the top of the branches on the cooler side of the tank only returning to the basking spot occasionally. I've also noticed he tends to avoid basking regularly when he's shedding. It could just be that you are often missing the times he's basking and are seeing him when he's cooling down. I have read in a few books that bearded dragons spend a lot of time climbing in the wild so i wouldn't worry too much maybe get a branch though so he can get closer to the light

With veg I offer it every day regardless and have now found he usually eats most of it along with his locusts. I've had a lot of success with british greens and bok choy as well as the odd bit of shredded carrot. its really worth offering veg as it is very good for their health. My guy will eat anything though, tried to swallow a temp probe the other day and has had a taste of my jumper :gasp:

I have to agree with this. An animal that spends so much time under a heat bulb is not being kept warm enough, Yours sounds like normal behaviour and your temps are correct.
