It all depends on what you see as a pet. If you want something that tolerates handling this will probably be very different to a species that should be left alone.
Mourning geckos are definitely a hands off species due to their small size and speed. But a small colony in a good sized (very secure and escape proof) naturally set up bioactive viv are great. Lots of clicking, whistling and tail flicking between each other.
They are generally nocturnal but do venture out by day too.

In which case leopard geckoes, bearded dragons, bosc monitors. Keep singly but can be handled.
Like I said, wanting a species that can be handled is usually very different to one that interacts with its environment.

 

Collared Lizards and Desert Iguanas would be worth looking into. They fit the bill perfectly and you can house a number together in a 4ft viv

 

Something like a blue tongue skink or ackie monitor might fit your criteria, or maybe a tegu if you've got the space.

If you have the space I’d suggest a Chinese Water Dragon. Mine is an active chap, in and out of his pool. Loves climbing and so on, sleeps at night and handles very well. For an adult you’ll need a decent sized enclosure, a pool (not a big water dish) and height for branches.
Mine feeds brilliant, hand feeds with no trouble as well.
