Breeding Royal Pythons

Okay so we tried breeding some of our royals this year but we haven't had much success. All are in good health aprox 4 years and good weight. We've had them all since babies.

We placed the male into the females Viv for approx 4 days then removed them for a few weeks. We stopped in Jan & Feb as we were decorating the snake room.

I saw some locks, but I don't know how to check if it's a dry lock or not & I'm not sure I would want to check.

Am I right in thinking that we should of had eggs by now? Or at least signs of gravid snakes? Last time they were paired was beginning of march.

Also any suggestions to help with breeding would be great?

I must admit a lot of the Youtube channels make it looks so easy. Stick the male in with the female three or four times, and bingo she ovulates and drops a load of eggs a month later after shedding. In reality it seems there's more to it. And not all females follow the rule book. I tried that one season, had nothing even though I had seen several locks. The next time I paired this female she continued to feed right up until three weeks before dropping eggs ! The 10 eggs totalled almost a kilogram, so have no idea where she put the food !

This season I've been pairing the same male around a dozen times, in fact they have just unlocked as I type. If what I observed a few weeks back was indeed an ovulation (she was already pinking up for a shed, looked large at 2,743g, and had signs of tail suck) then she should be dropping eggs in a weeks time... but she don't look that large at the moment, and normally they go into shed post ovulation, not at the same time...and she has only just refused to eat (although she was still stimulated by the scent, she refused to take the large weaner). - If she is gravid then she certainly isn't following the normal pattern / sequence of events !

So who knows if your snake is gravid or not. She could have retained the sperm and has ovulated - when was her last shed ? If it was more than 6 weeks ago then I would say that she ain't gravid yet as eggs are normally dropped 28-30 days post pre-lay shed. If she has just shed, is she off food?

I would bung the male back in and see if he still shows interest and see if they lock again. It may have been that the follicles were small, and now she's developed them further, so you are still in with a chance. Remember, the "season" can be upto 12 months from conditioning them, introductions, laying and hatching. The last clutch I had from this same female was dropped in August, having started pairing in January of the same year !
