Ours Russian tortoise has eaten the little green stuff on the top of the stalks.

Next day, when putting the stalks themselves on the dish together with dandelion leaves she didn't eat anything from that dish.

Somewhat concerned, our daughter fed then dandelion leaves by hand. Later, I removed everything from the dish, that is the fennel stalks including the dandelion leaves as they might have absorbed the strong smell from the fennel.

Having filled the dish with fresh dandelion leaves, she immediately started eating from that dish. : victory:

So, it looks like that she only likes the green stuff from the top.

An interesting article - but without mentioning fennel what could be rather a Mediterrenean plant - is this one:

But I still haven't tried it as I first need to become more knowledgeable about weeds and the other plants - poppies and the like - in general.

I always have been crap on most plants and only know palms.

:lol2:

And even if somewhat off-topic now, just a thought about the occasional givings of fruits.

Our tortoise has a quite fixed schedule every day. It is really astonishing how she sticks with the timing of her activities.

When we gave her once only a small piece of apple as a supposed occasional treat  next day she delayed her start from her hide about two hours. So, it seems that the apple piece has made problems.

And there is also a steppe lemmings breeder that is convinced that he's found out that fruits rich in sugar shouldn't given at all to steppe animals.

Most torts won't touch herbs.

And to be honest I wouldn't bother feeding any fruit at all, not even as an occasional treat, it can upset the torts tum. You would be better off giving an extra flower head or even a small piece of cucumber.

I totally agree with Shelley..........treats are a human concept to a tortoise it's just food.

The only 'treat' my lot get is opuntia cactus (pricly pear), its very hydrading on hot days and is full of calcium.....just wish it grew quicker :)
