Keeping monitors outside in the UK

Hi there my name is sam,

I was just wondering if it was possible to house monitors outside all year round in the uk, If this was possible it would be in a converted and insulated shed, would there be any problems with this or would it get too cold in the winter for it to be safe and comfortable for the animal or even a fire hazard?

Thanks a lot, Sam

P.s it would most likely be for a mangrove monitor.

Hi, if the shed were properly insulated then it would be possible, obviously you would need to test the temps during the coldest part of the year before putting the animal in there.
Do I take it you do not yet have a monitor, and if not have you any experience of keeping them?

I don't keep monitors, but do have an outside reptile house.

Mine is 35' x 10' x 7' and breeze block. I would say it is probably more important to keep an eye on the maximum temperature it gets to. You can always throw kilowatts at it if it's on the cold side. If it gets to hot not so easy.

My reptile house runs at 75 background and cost around ÂŁ300 per month in electricity. I doubt yours will be as much as I'm running multiple hot spots as well as the background. But it still won't be cheap, probably a couple of hundred a month average over the year.

Thanks for your feedback,
I most likely would check the temps in the winter time, but may be building in the coming summer months, I also dont have personal experience of keeping them but i have looked after them in other public facilities where i have volunteered so i have a basic understanding backed up by research knowledge.

Thanks for your reply,
I was most likely going to have 3 lamps, 2 halogen and 1 ceramic all on thermostats, do you recon it will still get to hot for this monitor if so would having thermoststats perfectly regulate or will it still be to uncomfortable for the animal?

How big is the shed going to be? I keep a large adult Asian water monitor in a room sized enclosure, it averages around ÂŁ90 per month during the colder months for the electricity, and that includes what I use for the household.
In the pic I`m using 5 x 80w halogen flood beam bulbs at the basking site, it`s important they heat at least the SV length...

The shed size will be a 6ft x 4ft x 5ft dwh, as mangrove monitors only avergage 3 to 4 ft it wouldnt need to be as huge as an aisan water monitors enclosure would have to be, with 3 lamps and possible a heater to keep the ambient tempreture constant do you think it will be very expensive? btw is your monitors enclosure outside or inside and how much roughly do you think it costs for those bulbs and the heaing for the room alone. as this may give me a rough estimate and the prices im looking at. Thanks again
