Leopard gecko blood in poop

While cleaning out one of my leos tonight I found a little bit of blood in her poop along with less digested bits of locust. The poop was a little more orange than I'd have liked too but it's shape wasn't dissimilar to how it usually.

She's around 2 months old (maybe a little younger) and has had loose poos for a while. We took her to the vet last week and she had a check and she has increased amounts of parasites. The vet said it wasn't severe enough to treat imediately espectially since she's so young as it could mess with her liver.

Her temps were a little hot and the vet said that it could have caused the increase in parasites so we moved her off the heat mat a little bit. She's also got to the stage that she lost interest in mini mealies so we put her on smaller size 3 locusts which she loves and scoffs happily. She's been on them around 5 days now.

Could the diet change have caused the blood or maybe the cooler temps? Or the parasites maybe? We've now fixed the over heating mat problem so is it worth giving her a couple of days to see if her tummy settles now the temps are better? She's eating very well and is very lively and well in herself. She's putting weight on nicely too. It's just her poo that's not right.

Thanks guys x

Hello
i don't think diet or temperature would cause blood in the feces how much was there ?.
i would give your vet a ring and see what they say they may say just monitor the situation if it is only a small amount of blood.
or if its larger they will suggest something else maybe a return visit with a fresh fecal sample its good that the Leos appetite and activity level is high.
hope to hear good news all the best.
just noticed you said you moved her off the heat mat a bit to lower the temps are you using a thermostat ? is a much easier and safer way of controlling temps.

I would think the most likely cause of the blood would be the parasites - do you know what sort they are? I can't throw any light on whether they should be treated or not at this stage - only your vet can do that - as I have never had a problem with parasites in my babies.
The best you can do is make sure all the husbandry is spot-on. Make sure there is a cool side as well as a warm side to the RUB. Clear away all waste matter as soon as possible and keep the rub spotlessly clean. Isolate her from any others. If there is any more blood loss I would contact the vet again.

ditto as Jools has said ~ I've personally not had any problems with young leos and parasites although one was brought to me a year or so ago which sadly didn't make it (http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/lizards/282045-fecals-not-important-think-again.html) the problem with young leos and parasites is that while medication may affect them more then an adult uncontrolled or untreated parasites etc can have a far more detrimental effect on their health and whilst low temps could be responsible for her passing undigested food so could parasites and personally if she's passing blood as well I'd plump to have her checked to find out exactly what parasites etc she has and would have her treated.

Thanks guys.

There was only a tiny spot of blood but the poop itself had an orangy tinge so I dont know if that was caused by blood.

I was given some poo sample tubes by the vet and have bottled this one as the earliest I could get to the vets is thursday. Got 2 more tubes so I'll do tomorrows and Wednedays to either post off or take with me to the vet.

She goes like clockwork, 1 whopper of a poo between 7:00pm-8:00pm every day so I clear her out as soon as I see it.

She's on paper towels atm so she has nothing to be impacted with. Her set ups a little funny. Shes in a rub atm which is in a bigger viv which she will eventually go in when she's bigger so her little rub is just over the heat mat that's in the bigger viv lol. I don't have a thermostat yet but I put a 'trick floor' made of wooden laminate in over the top of the heat mat to diffuse the heat which is working very nicely.

She's munching away as we speak so she's not off her food.

You ever fed a leo locusts on white paper towles? It looks like a masacre afterwards. Bits of leg and blood spots and smears everywhere. Could make a horror film yuck!

P.S The vet did tell me what type of parasite it was and I've totally forgotten the name of it and she said it was quite common for leos to have small amounts of this type. It's apparently nothing massive to worry about unless her symptoms persist or worsen. She was only reluctant to treat her because of her age.

I just wondered if maybe having cooler temps and her gorging herself might have caused some digestion problems yesterday and a bit of exoskeleton might have scratched her bowels or something? I don't even know if this is possible.
