Hi guys,

My margie has never been a big drinker and therefore doesn't pee a lot. However over the past few days he seems to be peeing constantly. The urine seems normal in the sense it is clear and doesn't smell but he really seems out of sorts. He just sleeps all the time and isn't interested in food. I've been giving him warm baths and haven't fed him for 24 hours. Any ideas? :(

Has your tortoise been outside?
How big is your tortoise?
What diet are you feeding him/her?
How long have you had him/her?
What temps are you using?
Sorry for the questions, but we need more info to be able to help:0)

No, we haven't been able to get him outside
He's about 5 inches long
He has a diet of weeds and flowers that I grow myself with some bought baby lettuce leaves to make it go further eg rocket, chard etc.
I've had him for over four years
UV light at about 32'c, kept on open top table with top soil and slate.

Sounds good what you are doing.
Just a tip, rocket and anything from the cabbage family are not so good for tortoises.
How do you know he keeps urinating?
I often see mine do the same in water, but not so on soil etc:0)
Lettuce is mainly water, so maybe that's why he/she is urinating more. I have not really come across this before:0)
Getting him outside would make a lot of difference to him/her, they become different tortoises.

I've been told that before but since my tort spends his entire day trying to escape from his enclosure and reacts to us being around, we decided to let him out for an hour every night. Most of the time he wanders around the coffee table and then settles down to sleep. My research also says that margies enjoy and need to be exercised.

Tortoises this time of the year, really need to be outside. The reason he/she paces the indoor enclosure, is because they know its warmer outside. And that's where they want to be.
Is there a reason you don't put him/her outside during the day time?
My tortoises are now outside 24/7 and are thriving.
Having reread that your tortoise is wandering around your house?
I hate to say this, if this is the case, then its not good for your tortoise, they can pickup bits of hair (that we cant see) and odd bits that fall and we don't see and eat them.
They really do need to be outside.

I live in a flat at the moment and so it possible for him to be outside. On nicer days (which are few and far between here in Glasgow) we bring him out when we are outside but really that's the best I can do at the moment.
We never leave him unattended when out because I know eating foreign objects can do him harm. He does spend most of the time in his enclosure. It's not like he spends 24/7 wandering about my floor.

Anyway, I'll take the rocket etc out his diet and see if it helps before I can get him to a vet.

Thanks.

Perhaps you could drop the temps a little if your tortoise is pacing, as it can be a sign of the temps being too hot. As when inside they have the same constant temp all the time. And outside temps can also make the inside temps go up.

Thanks guys but I didn't post on this thread about my tort peeing a lot to be criticised about not having a garden at the mo. I'm waiting on a mortgage settlement to move into a house with a garden within the next five weeks. I did my homework and know they need a garden and he has always had one previously but atm I need to live near my work til the house is ready. If not being outside is the reason he's acting like this then fair enough but no one has said this yet?
