Hello mate, I keep burmese an well what can I say beautiful animals.

1:Have you really got the space to house such a giant males get big but females get what is considered a monster.

2:At adult size what if it goes wrong an latches on? (Not saying it will happen but could)

3:Obviously you are willing to feed big prey items such as large rabbits etc throughout its life these are not as cheap as mice.

4:people say you should'nt own a burmese without having a boa etc first, I disagree, why have a snake you don't want?

5:Research, Research, Research.

6:What happens in the off chance you get an untameable animal who deals with it then? Before taking the plunge make sure you have the time to spend with them each night as something that big with an attitude is not going to end well if you're inexperienced.

7:No other snake i've found yet is more rewarding I raised my girl from 2 foot she's now pushing 10ft in under 2 years can you handle housing changes so quick? Remember snakes like to feel enclosed alot of the time so a huge viv is not recommended right off.

8:They are hissy an very vocal don't let yourself be warned off by this or you reinforce that soon as they talk you bugger off. I was unfortunate for a while as my girl would go for your face quite happily but she's not puppy dog tame but I trust her enough now to be around my neck so she can come out for exercise.

9:Have the up most respect for the animal not saying you wouldn't but if you don't you're setting yourself up for trouble if no one is around to help.

That's my 2 pence worth sorry if a bit lengthy housing requirements for me a hatchling can stay in a 33ltr rub for a while, move it up to a 70ltr, 4x2x2 viv, then i'd say once it's out grown them go for the final stage viv at least 10x3x2 for me. Don't forget these will need heating an please use thermostats.

Cheers mate,

Jake.

Bad idea for pockets, as dwarfs are renowned for an attitude! Pockets, step by step, no point researching what you aren't getting.

Oh Sharpy.... you shouldn't have said that, I wanted one so bad a few years ago but then decided not to even look much more into them due to what I'd heard about their grumpiness ... now you will have me thinking again - Tut tut, what have you done! :gasp:

corn snake to Burmese python... bit of a jump. especially when you haven't had this corn snake barely 5 minutes and you panic about everything it does and won't leave it alone and keep sticking your hand in there. Do this with a Burmese and you will have some serious problems.

No point even beginning to research any other snakes until you are confident with the one you have. And considering your hesitancy and worries with your corn snakes, getting a burm could be hazardous to both yours and the snakes health. They are not a snake to be messed with, and they can potentially cause a lot of damage, just like any big snake can.

Pockets, you are bringing yourself some problems on here mate. Seriously, get use to your corn as I'm not being funny if I had any burm/royal hatchlings I would refuse to sell to you at the moment. You haven't the knowledge for a corn and you are so wary around your corn, a burm isn't the snake for you nor you missus for the next 3-5 years if you carry on the way you are.

But that's not all there is to snake keeping. With big snakes, you can't afford to make mistakes. Very big difference between dealing with a pissed off corn snake and a pissed off burm. You deal with an angry burm wrong, and it won't just be a case of popping on the forum to get advise.

You was intimidated by a young corn snake, I seriously don't understand how the thought of a burm is even crossing your mind. Keep researching snakes in general, learn to read their behavior (which takes time). Get to know the snakes you have, which again takes time.

I'm not saying this to be horrible. I started with corn snakes, and there is no way I would have been able to jump from keeping corn snakes for a few months to keeping a burm. I have ALWAYS loved burms, and always wanted one, but when I started out, I knew I wasn't ready. And there is nothing wrong with that at all, unless of course you go ahead anyway.

I know you say it won't be for years yet, but then that means you don't even need to consider it. Concentrate on learning more about your corn snakes. Go out, get some books on their environment or just their are in general. Enjoy the snakes you have.
