Hello all,

My year old Royal Python has grown out of its tub so I want to buy a nice wooden vivarium.

Firstly does anyone know a good web site that sells vivs ? I want something that will look really nice in my house.

And will a:
VIVEXOTIC VX48 48" VIVARIUM ONLY

1220MM LONG X 470MM WIDE X 525MM HIGH
......be big enough for an adult Royal Python ?

Some advice please as I have seen some really nice pictures of vivs on this site so as much information is really appreciated ?

Hi there,

In the wild royals live underground in small burrows; this is where they spend the majority of their time.

They generally stay put during the day and use mainly the night to come out (due to less chance of being attacked) and hunt. Although obviously they wont be out on the lookout for potential prey for every night.

They are a very shy, secretive breed of snake, as you will well know; therefore a relatively smaller viv is in their best interest.

I reccommend not going any larger than a 4foot viv....and the one you pointed out sounds perfect.

And larger and the snake will feel intimidated and quite exposed.

Again, as with your tub ensure you place hideboxes at each end of the viv to ensure your snake isnt forced to pick safety over heat; and ensure you provide a large enough waterbowl to provide adequate humidity levels.

Best of luck

while NT66 makes a good point it's DEFINATELY worth pointing out that a lot of royals pythons would refuse to eat in such a large enclosure. Also well worth pointing out that in the wild royals pythons spend the majority of their time in very small tunnels/burrows etc. So yes, most royals DO like living in tiny spaces ;)

For quite a large percentage of royals that advice would be very counter productive indeed.

for most royal pythons a 3ft vivarium is fine (if a little too big for some!) We keep our adult royals in 50L really useful boxes.

Yes, I agree... all our royals are in 3foot x 18'' x 18'' vivs; with the exception of the smaller/younger ones which are in 2' x 1' x 1' viv until around a year old (appx 500gms) dependant on the individual though obviously.

Hideboxes are a must and make sure these are just cozy, as again, too large and roomy a hidebox, it will be defeating the object of its purpose.

cheers

do you think a 3ft x 15 wide and 18 high is big enough????

to be honnest id rather have one of those 3ft viv that are about 2 ft wide how high is debatable but i think at least 18 inch

I keep my adult female in 3'x2'x2' and she seems fine and eats regularly. As stated they tend to stay hidden and only come out to hunt. If they are feeding regularly then they don't come out much at all. The four foot would be fine but they like to feel secure so fill it with plenty of places to hide. Left with too much space can make some of them stressed which can lead to feeding difficulties.

good info guys, but i think it depends on the snake mine loves to be out and about thats why shes in a bigger viv, some might be shy and stay hidden all the time , but i agree no bigger than 4ft. folks say you need 1ft sq per ft of snake so i go by that as a starter

I have 9 royals and only 2 of them are in 3ft vivs (1.5kg-2-5kg Females), 1 (1kg Male) is in a 30" viv and the rest are in 2ft vivs, 2 of them in the 2ft vivs are 5yr olds both over 1.5kg and the other 4 are Sept 09 babies, i've had to go with individual needs (keeping quite a few spare vivs around lol) as my Oscar does not cope well in a 3ft viv where as Belle loves it in hers and so does Delilah, if you have a couple of vivs in different sizes it means you've always got a spare viv available (just in case a unexpected guest comes to stay lol).

any snake in any sized viv is ok in my opinion you just need to make sure its filled if you have a smaller snake, in the wild snakes dont stay in the same 4 foot space, as long as there plenty of cover not too much open space and you can make your snake feel happy i dont think theres a limit for viv size
