Hi

I am about to move my corn snake into a bigger vivarium and am looking for a smaller snake to move into his old home.

I was thinking about a Blue Garter snake. Any views of more experienced snake owners would be welcome. Is there anywhere in the UK they sell Blue Garters?

thanks

Steve

Most garters are hard to come by these days for some reason. Chances are that you'll have to fork out for a courier to send you one if you find any for sale, as it might not be local to you. Your only other option would be one of the Doncaster reptile shows, of which there are 3 a year- they do have garters there. Whether that would include the Florida blue garter is another matter.

Crystal Palace Reptiles currently have CB21 Lake Chapala Garters (Thamnophis eques obscurus) for about 45 quid. I believe these are quite variable in colour but most individuals have or can develop a good deal of blue colouration. Back in the 90s wc garters were quite freely imported from the US and I had a collection including marcianus, elegans, terretris, various forms or sirtalis, ordinoides, sauritus and others. Most did well on earthworms, flatfish strip with bone included and in many cases pinkies and fluffs. They were a delight to collect and keep but I'm glad the imports have stopped. I lost one female sirtalis a few days after purchase because she had been collected in spring after mating and the young had ceased development and died within her, perhaps due to stress in transit; she managed to expel the remains but never recovered despite all efforts.
