Bump on boas nose

My common boa has developed a small lump on her nose over the last couple of months. It is only the size of a pea but it feels quite soft, and she shows no signs of discomfort if I feel the bump. I took her to my vet, who to be honest didn't have a clue, prescribed us with Baytril but really that hasn't done the trick.

Has anyone heard of anything similar?

I will try take a pic tomorrow.

Thanks guys

Thanks

Thanks to you both, this prob does sound like the explanation.
The bump never got any bigger and like I say, she lets me touch it so I don't think she has any discomfort.
Not to mention she is her normal self and is still a greedy thing!!

Thanks again, feel a lot better :2thumb:

I would take your boa to a good reptile vet asap to have it checked.
Unfortunately that is not as easy as it sounds.

I live in the Isle of Man, and there isn't anyone over here who specialises in reptiles. I really wouldn't want to stress her by taking her on the boat for the long journey to see a vet in the UK/Ireland. It would also mean an overnight stay and I would worry about keeping her happy during the period she is away from home.

If I knew it would be more beneficial to make the journey I would be there in a flash, the money wouldn't even come into it because I love my boas.

As you can imagine... it's a dilemma! :2wallbang:

Have you inspected the upper gum area? Is it red or inflamed? Its possible a tooth went in it when she hit the glass.

My 16ft burm did the same, hit the water bowl striking at a piglet smashed her lower jaw. Tooth got lodged in gum, area got infected.

Had to swab the area with benodine solution and give her anitbiotics orally. Luckily she was as soft as puppy poo as I had to force her mouth open twice a day!

Just a thought plane for you..If there is no sign of redness / swelling in the gums it must be under the skin in which cas abcess or tumour I'd say. I'm no professional and do not claim to be. Only a porfessional could give an accurate examination and thse are hard enough to find on mainland UK!

Good luck

The vet over here did actually check this (although she was scared stiff despite my reassurances! I had to hold open the boas mouth for her!!)
and there was no signs of any redness at all.

I will take a pic tonight just to see if anyone has any ideas once they have seen it.

poop. how many vets are there on the isle of man? i would ask my roomie who is from the isle but as she doesnt have any pets i dont think she would know. it may be worth calling around and asking the various vets if any of them has any reptile experience...if not your own vet should be able to ring a colleague who is in "the know" or phone around to find someone (my vet has done this as i have sphynx cats)

i had a somewhat simliar problem with my jungle carpet python

she had rubbed around and had a bump which eventually turned into a big hard lump...i took her into the vets and he surgically removed it...it turned out to be hardened pus.

i would imagine your problem might be similar...however peace of mind is priceless.

my isle of mannite roomie said she can think of at least six...but any vets you see regularly for your other animals should be able to 'phone a friend' or at least another vet colleague anyway

it is most likely an abscess or some sort of fluid retention...however it needs to be looked at or perhaps the pics could be sent to your vet who could send them on for diagnosis. do chase this up...perhaps phone your vet and ask him about ringing around to colleagues as you are really worried and it is a somewhat precarious venture to the mainland with a reptile

When taking pics last night I noticed that the bump was actually quite hard to the touch, not as soft as it was a month ago. Has reduced in size too.
Anyone any further ideas after seeing the pics??

Day off tomorrow so gonna get on the phone to most prob every vet on the Island (well that won't take long!!! lol)

i really have no idea...i was thinking perhaps it was the same thing mine had...ie a slight injury which turned into hard puss. my vet sorted it out quick and put her under and it was a quick slice, remove the dried pus and seal and there was no scarring at all.

good luck with the ringing about...try your vet first as he should be trying to help you. if not ringing around to vets is your best bet (unfortunately i have been told most of the vets on the isle are for cattle) and if not perhaps one of us lot can recommend our reptile vets who could do some sort of phone/email diagnosis? geesh i dont know but i am sure we can sort something out.

please do keep us updated and the best of luck
