Corn Snake - Feeding Live Mice

Hi,
My corn snake is 4.7ft long, we have only been feeding it 1 small mouse per week. But after reading different things, Im going to start feeding it a couple of mice per week.

Would my cornsnake be ok with live mice, does anyone else feed their cornsnake live food?

What would people say on this?

while feeding live is not strictly illegal its frowned upon , if its already on defrost on earth would you want it to go on live , thats rediculous and plain stupid live should be a final option if its not eating at all. i have 2 live feeders and tried everything to get them on to defrost , its not a pleasant thing to sit and put a live rat in and hear it squeal like mad when its being suffocated.

I wouldn't feed live if the snake is eating defrost food fine. There's no need for it.

Why are you going to start feeding a couple of mice a week?
And do you mean, two mice in one sitting every 7 days, or 1 mice twice a week?
Would going up to the next size be a better option?

We have been feeding it one small mouse per week, ive seen some videos of snakes the same size as mine eating the next size up, and it looked to be struggling.

So I was going to feed it 1 mouse twice per week.

I personally would try the next size up. If you buy your mice from a shop, ask them if you can have a reasonably small medium mouse, or look for a large small mouse. Most places let you be a little bit picky when it comes to choosing food.

A corn snake that size should be feeding on large or possibly jumbo mice every 1 or 2 weeks.

i don't understand why you would consider feeding live mice to your snake if it's eating fine on defrosted mice... thats just un-necessary suffering for the mouse in my opinion.

just get the next size up,if it's not leaving a buldge in the tummy when it eats i'd say it can defiantly manage the next size up! it's amazing what prey size snakes can eat! :2thumb:

From that video I came above (HERE) you can see the snake eating the mouse.

From that video, would you still say feed it a bigger mouse?

No need. It actually wasn't going anywhere like that. Sometime I think people want thread to go off the wall.......

Anyway - to the OP,

As everyone has said, there is certainly no reason at all to feed live, nor to increase the frequency of the meals. In fact, I would do as the others said and reduce frequency and increase size.
Personally I feed my adult corns anything from two or three small mice to a rat weaner, anything from every week to every three weeks as I like to mimic the wild a little more and mix up sizes and frequencies. Let's face it, they don't eat every Tuesday at 7.37pm naturally do they!

Oh, and as for 'too big' - all these meals were eaten without a problem and kept down (though I wouldn't recommend any of them as 'regular' food items)...

You could feed bigger and leave a longer gap between feeds. You don't want to be feeding a jumbo mouse weekly as someone suggested. You will end up with a fat corn very quickly :lol2:

I would feed a large mouse every 2 weeks or so. You could feed smalls but you would need to fee more often so it's easier and cheaper to just feed a larger item less often :)

Nice corn too!

Cheers, money isnt an issue, so what ever is better for the snake ill go for that.

I feed all my adult corns a rat weaner/jumbo mice size, ever 2 weeks and the underweight girl gets 1 a week.

firstly i'm not gonna comment on the live feeding comment because it's stupid but a 5 foot corn could take a jumbo mouse, chick, rat weaners, or even small rats, but jumbo mice are the way i would go i think,
