Morning all... Just a quick one.

My 7month old crested gecko has been on repashys everyday ... Tried the occasional cricket and she just wasn't interested.

Put 4 tiny mealworms in a bowl last night and she loved them. Question is .. How often could I feed her meal worm? As an occasional treat or every few days?

Got quite a big tub, any ideas how to keep the mealworms alive ?

Thanks

Joel

Feed live food once a week stick to mainly your mrp HOWEVER there are mixed opinions on feeding cresties mealworms as there is some evidence that mealworms can cause impaction with them, I wouldn't do it as a just in case and feed mine dubias have you tried other forms of live food? If you are happy with the risks I'd say about 10 worms once a week

Btw looks lovely!

I don't have a CG so can't help you with frequency of feeding live.

I can tell you that they won't cause any impaction though.

And if you want to prolong the shelf life of the mealworms you have they can be refrigerated. They go into a dormant state that way and last longer.

Best thing to do is have some in the fridge and some outside the fridge being gutloaded. When the ones outside get low add some more refrigerated ones.

Try feeding smaller locust too, they are arboreal like the crestie, so will help keep the crestie active by having to hunt over the whole viv and not just the floor

Personally, I wouldn't stick to the '10 worms once a week' advice that was offered earlier in the thread, purely because of the digestion risks that can come with the chitin (hard skin) on mealworms. I'd stick to a few worms, a couple of times a week

My boys all get wax worms, meal worms and locusts a couple of times a week (they don't all eat all 3, some are pickier than others)

Mealworms are fine but I found mine didn't like them. Mine get live twice a week in the form of Locusts or roaches and the occasional waxworm as a treat.

You can feed her as many mealworms as she likes, there is absolutely no harm in it. All of the popular feeder insects have the same amount of chitin in their exoskeletons more or less at 15%, it doesn't matter if they're soft and squishy like waxworms, or tough and crunchy like morio worms. Chitin does not equate to hardness when it comes to exoskeletons, it's just a carbohydrate that holds everything together, just like the collagen in your skin. Yes it's hard to digest, but no more harmful to a gecko than a human eating sweetcorn or green vegetables. If you can't digest it, it just comes out the other end.
