I have received a note from my neighbour...i live in a flat... saying she is sick of finding crickets in her house, she has apparently informed her landlord and environmental health...without informing me wouldnt you know!

has anyone else had this problem?

I know part of the issue is that the room has no skirting boards as its yet to be plastered, but i cannot have this done until the summer as there is nowhere else in the house warm enough to put the pets while the work gets done!

I have immediately changed to locust and mealies...but my questions are...

can a leopard lizard live on mostly mealworms if they are well gutloaded?

is a couple of locust a week per crestie enough as the value pack contains almost exactly the number i need to give each crestie 2 each...they get cgd all week as well.

can an anole live on minimealworms?

how long will it take approx till she stops finding crickets...as i only ever find one or 2 lose in my house?

well i live in a house but i did have probs with my tegu in her top opening viv because it was wooden the crickets used to climb up to the top and wait for me to open the lid when i did they would all make a jump for it the way i get round it now is to feed her in a old 2ft fish tank and because its glass they count climb the sides

im guessing you mean a leopard gecko well its been done but i highly don't recommend it as the gecko prob wont live its full potential life as the crickets provide them with exercise so it could have a number of other health probs in the future

so locust twice per week mmm! i recommend atleast 4 times a week my tegu gets black crickets pr locust 7 days a week in the morning i give her meal worms and i leave some greens in her food bowl but in the evening i give her black crickets or locust
can an anole live on minimealworms?
the same applys for the anole

Eee gad i hate crickets lol.. i empty a few into an empty glass tank and get my OH to cut there legs off while im screaming at the other side of the living room haha.. he cut ones head off and its feelers were still moving after 2 days :(!!
Crix last forever.. they are like indestructable lol... One escaped in my room where i had my basilisk and i didnt sleep in my room for like 2 weeks.. funnily enough the night i decided to return i woke up to find the b*stard on my pillow!
They are eeeevil...

As for the food... plain mealies arent ideal, although if they are properly gutloaded i don't see why not.. i mean your planning on feeding crix again when you get your flat decorated right? So its not like it's a lifelong thing..
You could always try adding some extra wormy type's instead of mealworms every now and again for a bit of variety like silkworms and calci worms :)

Hi Amby,

You know I had this issue, and to prevent any ill will with people I live near, we just took a lot of precautions as it is impossible for me to stop using crickets completely.

For your leopard lizard and anole you will need to utterly secure the vivs, I have secured my cave geckos by rehousing them in large RUB's and the Leaftails vivs/tubs have been sealed up with tape. The exoterra's I have sealed up too, drop me a pm about it and will try to tell you as best I can (voice now gone!)

The ackies viv we sealed by putting superfine wire mesh (behind the white air vents) and started feeding mostly locusts.

Cresties are fine with locusts as long as they will take them, my adults are sometimes not keen though, so mostly they just get clarks. If I am going to feed geckos with the crickets, which I still do on occasion, I will feed them by hand from tongs. I have not had escapees for a long time now.

You will also want to get some sticky traps from Livefood UK Crickets Locusts Mealworms Reptile vivarium supplies mail order. Maybe as a goodwill gesture you could drop some in to your neighbour to show you are trying to help. Place them mostly in the rep room, along skirtings etc, but also around the house, in bathrooms, kitchen, livingrooms etc, all along the skirting area.

Ok..

So i suppose you humanely kill all of your insects instead of brutally feeding them still alive to be crushed by the jaws of a lizard? I'm sure you wouldnt like to be fed to a hungry rep but you still do it lmao!

They can still run around just as fast, they just cant jump out of the RUB's when im feeding and they cant climb up the walls. makes life alot easier for me lol

offer to help by buying some sticky cockroach traps for her and explain that you are very sorry and you are working on a solution to the problem

as for how long she will be pestered by crickets depends on the living conditions they can survive quite well and breed lose in the house if its warm

we had them as far as in the street, which the neighbours though the chirping was relaxing.luckily they didnt get as far as in peoples houses.i think the 1st thing would be to go mad with the sticky traps especially as they are really good and cheap.i stick to hoppers/locusts now as they are dumb and dont really hide.

how are you losing so many crickets?
mine are in a cricket tub and i never lose any? are there holes in your vivarium that they can fit through? try blocking them, obviosly making sure theres enough ventalation still

How are you losing so many????
We keep ours in a cricket keeper and we dont really have many go astray and we feed our beardies out on the carpet!! just had one run under the fish tank the other day!!
I don't want to spoil your new year but........ my work colleagues next door neighbour had a prob with crickets... enviromental health and council were involved and she had to get rid of her reptiles because they were not classed as domesticated animal :)

jees i would die if i had to get rid of my reps but as i said their experts at climbing up wooden vivs and when you open the viv they jump for it since i feed my tegu in a separate glass tank non have ever escaped since trust me give it a go :lol2:

or if you don't want to fork 20 pound on a fish tank and you don't have any spare go to Wilkinson and get i think its a 85L storage box with lid their clear as well and their only like 5 pound
