Hi, my son has a 5 month old crested gecko & he has a heat lamp but nothing else, but as they are night time lizards, I was under the impression that they didn’t need any UVB light, is that right please? As I don’t trust the advice given to us from the pet shop, he eats the all in one paste but he has also stopped eating crickets now too, he just isn’t interested & because he is not eating crickets any more, should he still be getting the power supplements or does he not need them either, cheers

I don’t keep cresties, so don’t have direct experience, so just applying reasonable logic.

Can the gecko benefit from UV? Yes
Nocturnal or diurnal relates more to activity levels rather than avoidance of sunlight per se.

My expectation is that they might bask under it periodically on occasion, but even if only once a month, that could still provide a health benefit 🤷🏻‍♂️

You’d need to select a suitable emitter (presumably something like shadedweller arboreal from Arcadia?).

It might even stimulate appetite, which could resolve the issue over not taking livefood.

Hope you find the answers you were looking for.

You don’t really need UVB and in some cases it can be harmful. Most crested gecko diets contain vitamin D3 which should be enough. Granted, they can benefit from UVB, as all reptiles do, but it’s not a necessity to have any specialist lighting, or in some cases even heating.

As they are crepuscular (active in dusk and dawn) they can benefit from a weak UVB light, but you don’t need anything fancy or powerful. Too much UVB exposure can be real bad for them.

Im using an LED / UVB light for mine that provides small amounts of UVB. That alongside her CGD and supplements gives all the D3 necessary.
