Hi all

I am looking into getting a Horsefield Tortoise but my family are worried it will smell (or rather its enclosure will smell).

Are they right? Will it smell particularly?

I will be doing spot checks daily as well as regular cleaning of the entire table. I have kept many pets over the years including Rats, Stick Insects, cats, dogs, fish and more...

Any info or advice will be very helpful yet again.

Thank you :)

Tortoises do have an earthy type smell, but its not that bad. But mine are not kept in a room where we are.

I get the impression that if they're tables are kept clean, they don't give off much of a smell.

Mine would be kept in my bedroom (my pet, my room). I'm 38 by the way, but I can't afford my own house right now, so I'm living with family. What I mean is that I'm fully old enough to appreciate the needs of specialist pets!

Horsfields are a burrowing species, so not suited to indoor life really, needing very deep substrate. They do better in a permanent outdoor enclosure with added heat. Pet shops will tell you different. I would recommend taking advice from a breeder ;)

I have only had my tortoise for eight years and she is a 3.5kg Spur-Thigh around 60 years old. I have learnt a lot from being on the Tortoise Trust Forum, and lots of people have what you are proposing. They generally have at the very least, 4inches of soil/sand mix substrate on their Tortoise Tables so that the tortoise can burrow down naturally. This would be for a baby or juvenile. If you have a lot of space outside, you could build some outdoor accommadation later on when it is bigger. I am new on this forum so am called an egg like you. There are far more experienced people than me on here!

Species such as Horsfields generally do quite well outside in the UK during warmer months. Most keepers on here would reccomend getting them outside during the warmer weather.

If you look around in the section you should find lots of examples of outdoor enclosures as well as tips on tortoise proofing your garden.
