Just fed my boa, she struck for the rat as usual, however the rats guts 'exploded' ( I might be exaggerating :] ) out of its anus :gasp:. I didn't think this was right so i managed to get the rat off her, hope i have done the right thing. Once i had took it out, the smell of the rat was grim , wether this was just stomach/gut contents or wether it was off i don't know. Shouldn't be off as i only got them last sunday (frozen) and put them straight in to freezer when i got back. Have i done the right thing? I think i'll try again tomoz. What would you all have done? :notworthy:

You prob over heated the rat causing it to explode.

Depending on substrate I'd have left it or tried to get it back.

If paper I'd leave it, if bark chips or something else similar I'd try to get it or stop stuff sticking to the rat

I dont' heat the rat up. Only 'exploded' as she struck it. I say 'exploded' etherything just came out of its A**, could of been cos of the pressure/ bite force. I managed to get it out, as i thought the same as you with it being on beach chips. Needless to say she was NOT very happy lol.

Agreed! The innards of even the freshest rodents will reek...I wouldn't try to get a food item off anything once it's taken it - whether it be worrries about the aggression I'd come up against or stressing the animal out and putting it off of feeding in the future in the case of the more fussy/stressy animals.

I wouldn't worry about it...i feed all my animals in viv as well and haven't had an impaction problem yet!

agreed with the previous posts i would have left the rat with him, sometimes they do get a bit over excited and 'pop' there food but they don't seem to mind and i always leave it with them.

I'm breeding boas for the first time this year - after fifteen years of keeping snakes and NOT breeding...I'm crapping myself and worrying about all kinds of crap :) it's all good fun. This website can be terrific and horrific in equal measure... sometimes people can be the most helpful, understanding guys you could hope for...other times you need to make your own choices as people on here can be nothing more than a complication. Good luck, and don't worry too much is my advice :D

Well good luck with the boas. Just been on you albums, that jungle jag is amazing, what are they like temperment wise? Yeh sometimes people do go all around the houses on here for something that can be done more simply, but the advice i have had has been spot on :D
