Just wondered if anyone else has had litters of ferret kits from so called vasectomised hobs? i borrowed a hob from a friend around 5-6 weeks ago to take 3 rescue gills out of season, now i have what looks like 3 very pregnant jills!! needless to say im not very happy, luckily my local vet is great and as i do all of their ferret rescue they have offered me free scans and x-rays just to make sure, which is really kind of them.

The females if they are actually just having phantom pregnancies are now HUGE, they have all started to take the fur of their tummies and are making nests, they are eating non-stop and acting very pregnant. Have had lots of ferrets with phantom pregnancies and these girls just seem very very large lol.

They are all booked in for scans tommorrow at 5pm so fingers crossed i have just 3 very non-pregnant girls. The hob that has been used on them successfully took the owners female out of season with no kits. Anyone else had similar experiences?

Forgot to add that i do realise vasectomised hobs are supposed to be infertile, but some websites claim that males can actually go through a 'reversal' 2 years after the op, and also depending on the surgeons skills, they think the number of cases in which this happens may be 70%?

Moons ago I worked in ferret rescue and the woman who ran it (and knows her stuff) swore blind that vasectomies can reverse. I remember several litters being dumped on her over the years from allegedly vasectomised males.
It can reverse in other animals too. I personally know someone who has gone on to father several children despite a vasectome. Sucks to be him and caused some eeal ossues in his relationship for a while as you can imagine.

pics would be good :)

i've always used a vasectomised hob with no problems, as do most of the ferret keepers i know. this is my current ones first year, but my previous lad covered all my jills for nearly 6 years without incident.

while i've dealt with my fair share of phantom pregnancies over the years, none of mine have ever developed a swollen stomach. thats not to say it cant happen, its just not happened to me, so i do think the vets is the best course of action.

regarding vasectomies reversing, i have never known it happen to myself or anyone i know. however there can be issues if the operation is not done correctly and all the 'tubing' removed, which is why most vets will insist on samples being sent away to ensure everythings gone before the hob is used on a jill.

Yep 3 pregnant jills !!!!!!!!!!
Due in the next 1-2 weeks, if anyone is looking for kits im making a waiting list, people at
Top will havr first pick of the litters. Have some homes lined up already, the vet has thankfully said he thinks small litters - fingers crossed 1 each lol then I can keep them all!

I was very shocked to find out they can reverse the op, apparently its best to try them with just one female each season to try and check they are still ok before going with other girls, hes not my hob so I will be informing the owners, maybe someone could create a sticky on this so people can be informed of gthe risks or maybe I will post in the castration etc section

see it happen to many owners every year.

It seems some vets just don't know who to do it properly. I be asking the vet for a refund or for him to it again for free.

personaly I would have them all neuetered later in the years when they have finished with there kits

Phantom jills can get the swollen bellies, even swollen nipples! Its amazing how realistic they can be. Then just one day, they snap out of it! After speaking to a well known ferret breeder, they can even produce false milk!

V-hobs can still produce sperm several weeks after the operation. When was he done do you know? Im getting my male v-sected.

If you dont want to go down the spaying route, why dont you try the implant?

I hope everything goes ok with your babies. :)

Lol wondered when i would get someone asking why we havent spayed them instead. The only reason we didnt get these girls spayed is that they are all rescues and were in season when we recieved them, it seemed the best option at the time to use a v hob and we have used v hobs for years with no problems, as i think other people on here have mentioned :)

Obviously i wasnt planning to have 3 litters as we run a rescue service!! I do have all my own females covered by the implant and my hobs neutered. The females have all undergone ultrasound scans at our vets and this has confirmed they are all pregnant as heartbeats etc were seen, needless to say we will be looking after the girls in the best possible way, i have had litters of kits in the past so luckily we do have experience in this :) the kits will be fed a high quality diet and will be very well socialised, as i mentioned before we are already finding homes for them!

The hob that was used belongs to a friend of ours so i will be informing them of the problem, i guess they will be contacting their vet, im guessing they will be due a refund :) Luckily he is still here with us and hasnt gone on to see any other jills!!

I hope you havnt taken offense at anything i said! Im actually on the v-hob team rather then the spaying team. My hob is getting vasectomised soon to service my two jills.

Tis a sucky situation to get stuck in. Rescues break your heart!

I know, we have decided to keep all 3 of the girls :) I may keep
One or two kits as well but we have decided that the older girls should stay with us now, no
More moving homes for them. Im a sucker for elderly ferrets as well, as noone ever wants the real oldies, ive got a group of 8-9 year olds, we joke its an old people's home for ferrets, you hardly ever see them as they sleep so much lol! We are not a massive rescue centre but do rescue for a few of the local vets, there seems to be a few people who dump ferrets round hereras every year we take in some that have been found locally, I wonder if its the same people as they are always found in the same areas!!

I dont understand how people can dump ferrets. They have such big personalities. :(

2 of my rescues had been there for 8 months! because they were albino, and they are the most amazing ferrets, so friendly and extremely playful as well as cute!

Never understood how people can pick and choose, i let the ferret pick me.

Though i have to say with those two, i went to the rescue just before xmas and basically walked in and said "I'll take whoever has been here the longest" and that was that, i just wanted 2 ferrets to have a forever home for xmas and wouldn't change them for the world, they now live in my group of 7 and are loved by the other and love the others the same, i just love rescuing, it's so rewarding, all 12 of mine are :)
