Leopard Gecko Breeding Season Questions

Hi all :) Might be a few questions here, but answers are greatly appreciated!

This year i plan on breeding my geckos, i've had my male for about 5 years and ive owned my females for the past year and a bit. Now, here are my questions:

  1. I was under the impression that even if geckos havent bred, they will still lay unfertilized eggs, is this true? Only asking as one of my leo's laid eggs, however the other 4 females didn't and im not sure why? They are def females.
  2. what is the typical breeding season for a gecko? I see people posting that they have eggs now, which is awesome, but i thought it was feb onwards, or is this a per gecko thing?
  3. Can stress of moving homes affect gecko's laying eggs either fertilized or non fertilized?
  4. Apart from the pink dot/white areas is there any other way of checking if a gecko is ovulating? One of my females seemingly has thicker skin than the rest!
  5. Neutral ground, male introduced to female cage, or female introduced to male cage - which is best to trigger mating?
  6. If the male is not of sufficient weight (only by a little) will the females reject him/not give off chemicals to let him know they are ready?
  7. Why does can my male not seem interested in mating sometimes, is it purely due to no ovulation/season yet or could it be something else?
This is all i can think of right now, thanks all, remember im new to this however i have done some research before and before you guys jump on me, yes i have the money for the vet, all the equipment, everything is set up etc etc ;)

Much appreciated,

Andy

A some will some want, leo are very easy to sex so if they are male you now it

A the breeding season is mostly feb to sep but some can easy replicate this buy cooling as females start to ovulate around the winter solstice also some leos start early

A yes this can stop them from laying myself i would not mate if your moving in the next few weeks
Apart from the pink dot/white areas is there any other way of checking if a gecko is ovulating? One of my females seemingly has thicker skin than the rest!

A as far as i know the pink under belly is the best indicator of ovulation some say a more rounded body also shows females getting ready

Neutral ground, male introduced to female cage, or female introduced to male cage - which is best to trigger mating?

A myself i always put the male to the female i think she feels less intimidated in her own tub/viv and is more likely to breed

If the male is not of sufficient weight (only by a little) will the females reject him/not give off chemicals to let him know they are ready?

A if your male is of a age that he is ready to breed then he will , weight is more about health as both male and females lose some weight in the breeding season so having a good start weight is a good thing

Why does can my male not seem interested in mating sometimes, is it purely due to no ovulation/season yet or could it be something else?

A could be he not ready yet or the females not ready myself i only breed females of 2 years old plus and over 60g i feel this give you better egg production and more mating successes rate

all i would say on this is make sure your setups are spot on if your not already i would recommend repashy calcium plus been using it for 2 years this year all my female lost very little or nothing in weight after laying 10 eggs each, the other thing is house your babbies on there own i find they eat better and it easy to keep tabs on them

good luck

I'll put my answers in red

  1. I was under the impression that even if geckos havent bred, they will still lay unfertilized eggs, is this true? Only asking as one of my leo's laid eggs, however the other 4 females didn't and im not sure why? They are def females.
A few females will lay unfertilised eggs without any male presence. Many do not. Being in the presence of a male will often induce ovulation (during the breeding season) - if no mating has taken place then obviously these will be infertile.

  1. what is the typical breeding season for a gecko? I see people posting that they have eggs now, which is awesome, but i thought it was feb onwards, or is this a per gecko thing?
Typical breeding season is Feb to August - ish. But Leos can be funny things and may breed at other times.

  1. Can stress of moving homes affect gecko's laying eggs either fertilized or non fertilized?
Yes - moving home is stressful for them and this can sometimes inhibit ovulation.

  1. Apart from the pink dot/white areas is there any other way of checking if a gecko is ovulating? One of my females seemingly has thicker skin than the rest!
This is the only definite way of telling if they are ovulating. However, with experience and knowing your Leos as individuals it can sometimes be possible to recognise other signs - such as change in appetite, restlessness, marking.

  1. Neutral ground, male introduced to female cage, or female introduced to male cage - which is best to trigger mating?
IMO this depends on the characters of the geckos involved. I usually try on neutral ground first.

  1. If the male is not of sufficient weight (only by a little) will the females reject him/not give off chemicals to let him know they are ready?
Males are usually up for, and capable of, mating whatever weight they are (isn't that SO true whatever species :lol2:)

  1. Why does can my male not seem interested in mating sometimes, is it purely due to no ovulation/season yet or could it be something else?
There are some males that just aren't interested in mating at all. Some males have their preferred females. Some are very sensitive to seasons, environmental factors such as being in a strange viv, whether a female is ovulating, and so on.

This is all i can think of right now, thanks all, remember im new to this however i have done some research before and before you guys jump on me, yes i have the money for the vet, all the equipment, everything is set up etc etc ;)

Much appreciated,

Andy
I hope this helps - good luck.

Thanks jools that's some great info :) My male bred with one of my females fine last year, yet doesnt seem interested in the others yet, but i will put that down to no season yet as i havent made the vivs colder in the winter or anything, same temp all the time. I've popped him in an upgraded viv recently and he's been a bit funny since, so will put that down to stress, also the temp seemed a little lower than normal so upped that hoping he gets himself sorted soon. Once again, thanks for all that :)
