I am so proud of myself now lol, seriously. Because I have switched form using a heat mat to using a heat lamp and putting all adult pedes in a 60 litre tank, it makes a great display now as well as giving them more space and proper heat/humidity. They are in my reptile room so not on house display but even so. It looks so good in real life. They are all doing well, all have found a nice big of cork bark or wood to hide under and the temps and humidity is perfect for them! I just hope they breed now!

-I also have a bio-active substrate in the form of woodlouses living in the soil and breeding to help break down the millipede waste.

 

No waterbowl & food dish? Despite it being humid, pedes like to soak themselves like snakes do, and also like a source to drink out of. You also need to have a food dish, for the fruit to go on, then small remnants dug into a corner for the clean up crew to munch on.

 

The food I just place in, The water they take off the moss, don't worry I have been keeping them like this in a similar closer for over 2 years and they are doing just fine. Pus I dont want any bowls in their enclosure. They have plenty of wet spots they can soak in. I like their enclosure to look as natural as I can get it and I am happy with the way they are being kept.

 

Mmm, just suggestible to have some form of pool. As pedes are found around heavy water sources. : victory:

 

I've kept Giant Millipedes for 13 years, none of mine have ever had the luxury of a water dish. My eldest girl died last year at an age of at least 6 and a half years and a length of 14 inches


. I've seen millipedes drink from dishes and trample mud through dishes, but I've never seen them soak in a water dish. I've always just sprayed them daily to let them drink from the sides of the enclosure, and put the food, be it fruit or veg, directly onto the substrate. The live substrate then handled the rest. In fact, the big girl used to live with African Land Snails and Hissing Cockroaches in a really manky fish-tank, and I used them to break down all the snake and lizard waste. I then broke down that enclosure after 18 months and used the substrate to seed non-bioactive substrates. I was basically using the Bugs as nature intends- as detritivores

 

How big are they, and the others? Size of tank also?

 

Adult giants 7 inches and the smaller ones are 3.5 inches. enclosure is a 60 litre fish tank. Although I can upgrade the size as we have a few empty tanks lying about so space is not an issue. I read on a couple of care sheets that community millipede tanks work well with all sizes.

 

Right Josh, I am going to try out the water bowl - I will see if it works for me, it does for you and doesn't for Strictly so I suppose its one of those personal preference things I will upload a photo. I have also just added my 2 pink fotted millipedes, and i will see how they get along. (There old tub was far to small and boring).

 

They'll be fine together. :2thumb: I suggest a deep plastic bowl of sorts, filled with pebbles. (So they don't drown, but have access to the water. + It's weighted)

2ft tank should be fine, although if you notice things getting a bit too cramped in there a 3ft should suffice that. Millies, gotta' love 'em!

 

I know, its weird I have had these a while now and just stuck them in a tub and forgot about them (except to feed and spray). Tonight I found a spare lamp kicking around and I had been hiking earier up cheddar gorge and found a load of fresh moss and so I fixed them a completly new set up. looks good I will add the photos in a sec of the changes I have made...

They are all tucked up under the moss now and they have also been out and about. I definatly did good here I think, I have seen improved behaviour since I moved them over! A good learning curve me thinks!
