Which type are you talking about? There's alfalfa, paper, etc? Some have different qualities such as being more obsorbant or holding odors better than others.

if ingested sure these type of substrates would swell quite alot just drop some in water!!!

 

Once they get humid they will swell.I bet they are dusty too.

I thought so ......I would rather shovel a donkey turd than that stuff.

 

It will certainly come in handy if the giant snake does not fancy eating its feeder rabbit.

so i see the majority agree with me then,hes going to try them anyway no matter what i say but as said on here there are many flaws to using them as a substrate,the same guy tried using peat previously with a few issues

 

if he just goes down to somewhere that stocks horse bedding then most are acceptable, jsut without perfumes.

I have only used alfalfa with rabbits, but IMO its not very absorbent or odor controlled. On the plus side, they are safe. Alfalfa pellets are just pressed hay, they are completely natural and won't swell up when wet like paper products.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that they can cause harm if ingested due to a snake not being able to digest plant matter of any form. Don't know if its right or not but I can see the logic behind it. Snakes digestive system is capable of digesting meat, bones but thats totally different to plants. I believe that the rabbit pellets are prone to attract small mites especially if it becomes damp.

 

all my retics, in fact most of my snakes, are on equisorb. only costs me about 8 or 9 pounds for a big bag of it and one bag will do all the vivs two or three times.
