Does anyone know why my 10+ yr old corn snakes tail has gone like this. What could it be?

Has it appeared suddenly, or developed gradually? Can he move his tail normally? It looks like a tail of really underweight or dehydrated snake ( which yours doesn't seem to be ), so my other guess is muscle wastage for some reason - but that would have happened gradually?

A photo of the whole snake would be handy. In the top picture there seems to be a change mid body where the spine transitions from the usual loaf of bread cross section to a defined ridge. Feeding records would also help as well. I would agree, based on the two images it looks like a nutrition and or dehydration issue.
