I keep my 4 Hermanns females in a converted heated shed. The temp is around 76f and have a uv light which is switched on for around 10 hours a day and the staple diet is weeds with a calcium supplement. I do not hibernate my tortoises for my own reasons.
I have used multi compost as bedding with hay, but I have noticed today that one of my torts is whistling when breathing but when I pick her up she stops? She is eating, active and there is no sign of illness or RNS. I have changed the bedding today by removing the hay and putting fresh compost down
Please any suggestions....thankyou

I know this is an old thread but I was looking at the threads because I noticed my tortoise making a slight whistling noise today - I just had to respond as the statement "hermanns don't get RNS" is completely wrong and giving wrong. information like this is very dangerous!! My tortoise is a 13 years old hermanns and he had RNS when he was a lot younger. He was diagnosed at a very reputable reptile vet. Hermanns do and can get RNS!!

I think what should have been said, is they are less likely to get RNS than most other med tortoises.
