right i think ive found the cause for my snake never pooing without the help from the warm bath. yesterday he passed a huge urate ball. there was also 2 little droplets of blood that came out aswell which i think was caused by passing something so big and solid. he seems fine, maybe abit lethargic but does anybody no how to treat and prevent him from getting these urate balls? thanks

oh hes a corn snake btw!

hes a yearling male corn snake. except he is huge for his age. he is overweight due to overfeeding while i was in hospital (was given a small mouse every 3 days untill i found out and instrucuted not to)

hes now on fluffies again because im trying to get him to lose some weight. he sheds fine, and eats like a monster. except he cant poo. ive mentioned a few times on various threads that i have to give him a warm bath every 3~5 days after feeding. this time round i felt a really hard lump right by the vent. so popped him in bath and he did a monster poo and this large round ball came out. i also noted that the rest of the white urate looked almost powdery. like it was a crushed up balls remains. when i took him out after i could see he was sort of prolapsing. some of his inside was hanging out but after about i minute it went back in. 2 little drops of liquidy blood (very very small, mostly watery with a slight reddish tint) came out either side of the vent.

im looking for a way of treating and curing, and hopefully preventing further reoccurances and hope that this will clear up his lack of pooing!

not the most useful video. i know what the uric acid balls are, and mine has no problem passing them when he is soaked. my problem is that it keeps reoccuring. im looking for a way to treat him so that he does not keep producing these. whether it is adding something to his water, changing his diet, anything like that.

yeah its not very helpful to my situation. because i know what the problem is, the snake can pass them with a warm bath. i just want to what causes them, and how to stop him getting them. doesnt say anywhere in the video how to prevent them or what the causes are!

no that is a valid response. i think missing 4 feeds might be a tad too much. i dont like the idea of him having the processed remains of a pinkie inside him for 5 weeks though. i would rather try and mimic the times he would normally poo, so 3 days after a feed. anyway at this point anything is worth a try so next feed he gets a pinkie!

another thing i was pondering earlier, i defrost his mice in hot water, could the hot water be cooking the skin of the mouse which inturn isnt being digested properly? just an idea!

ive googled and googled and googled this problem and from what ive deduced from various poor sources, the uric acid balls are made by a lack of water? is this true?

he has access to fresh water which is changed every few days, and his bowl is thoroughly cleaned once a week.

he still has a lump running down his right hand side from just after his tail running about 1 1/2 inches. its soft to touch and isnt there all the time, not sure if it could be an internal parasite, as ive never dealt with them before i wouldnt know what im looking at. could it be a liver problem, or kidneys? or maybe bladder?

urate balls

Hi I know this thread is ancient, but I just had the same thing happen to my jungle corn. She's big for her age (1.5ys) and maybe a gram or 2 overweight, but nothing that missing one feed wouldn't solve. She's had this problem before, but never to this extent. The poo was huge, and 4 urate balls came out along with a bunch of crumbly urates and a big poo. After, she had a tiny bit of blood around her cloaca. She pooped pretty soon after I had her in a bath, and she has a big viv an fresh water, but isn't very active. Can this be a tank humidity problem? I am going to try to bathe her more, mist the tank a bit, and let her miss a meal to let that irritation in her cloaca calm down and heal. Does anyone else have any other ideas? Also, I am a 4 hr. drive from the nearest reptile vet, (I no longer live in the UK) so "just bringing her in" is unfortunately not an option...

We never feed a grown snake until it after it poos
Only hatchies get fed regularly because they often digest virtually everything so have nothing to poo
We never have any problems with urates or constipation

Think about the way a normal snake poos
Eats/few days later urates/then poo either just afterwards or up to a few days afterwards

but feed that same snake before it has pood and the result is more like this
urates/poo/urates/poo
urates can go hard and chalky
so block them inside by feeding before the last urates have passed and you are asking for potential problems imo

Corn's are normally little poo machines in my experience. They eat then 2-3 days later let it rip (i now don't handle till day 4 to avoid it on me!)
Its not uncommon for corns to pass urates prior poo, My snow deposits Urates before i have a whole world of it now she's on rat weaners.

zoizeau - how often are you feeding and what food size are you currently using? what are your temp's on both sides? I have a CB11 corn thats just gone onto small rat weaners and only gets fed every 14-16 days (allowing her to be properly empty before her next feed). I've never had to mist any corns i have kept as a large water bowl provides enough humidity for a corn. : victory:
