Hey

A month or so ago my hoggie was sat in his water bowl when I checked on him in the morning, but he was coming up for a shed so I was not hugely worried.
So he sheds all is fine. Then on Saturday morning he was coiled in his water bowl again.
Does anyones Hoggie do this?

I took all his substrate and decorations out on saturday, cleaned all the viv, and put him back on paper towels, to check for signs of mites. Now he looks like the most pissed off snake in the world with no burrows to build and only a couple of loo roll tubes to hide in.

There are NO signs of mites on him, in the viv, in water bowl or on the paper towels. Have I over reacted? Do I need to leave him on paper for longer?

Never once seen my hoggie soak in her water bowl & she does like it hot temp wise, she does however make good use of her moist moss hide and seeks it out whenever she needs too.

Bless him no wonder he's not happy, once you're satisfied there's definitely no signs of mites at all then you can sort his home out again for him......poor wee hog :lol2:

If you've checked and cleaned out the viv and found no signs of mites he most likely doesn't have mites. He might just be taking a bath? Maybe someone could give you more reasons for him to bathe but i wouldn't worry to much if that's the only thing you've noticed. Maybe it's temps ?

Thought i'd add iv never owned a hoggie, maybe this is strange behaviour for one i don't know.

With most species of snake, especially hognose, soaking is not a natural behavior. In captivity we see this usually only when there is an issue with husbandry. It usually means the snake is not getting enough moisture from its environment and is either close to dehydration or already dehydrated. Offer your hognose a humid hide on the cool end of the cage. They utilize these moist areas frequently as it helps them to maintain their hydration levels. Once you offer a humid hide, you will not see unnatural behaviors like soaking or "bathing" anymore.

Recently took Greg up on this advise and both my hognose now seem to really enjoy having their moist hide, just used some coco fibre and a sprits of water. Both now seem to be quite happy and active and my largest took 2 pinkies for the first time. They are pooping and roaming alot more now.

Thanks for your help people, GregM your insights into the world of Hog are invaluable

I have just checked again and there is NO sign of any creepys. So I am going to re install some nice clean lig and his bits, because he is not loving the tissues :(
For the moist hide, do I literally fill a medium exoT hide (because I have a spare one lol) with some spagnum moss that is moist but not wet and keep it sprayed every couple of days?

Herb I have managed to track down some woodlice that require less humidity than most... Will PM you details when I get home.
